In today’s article, we will give you detailed information about the Service Selection Board’s Interview Selection Test (SSB interview) and also provide information about its various centres. SSB interview is conducted for the selection of officer posts in the armed forces of the country. Whether you want to become a permanent officer or a task officer, it is mandatory for everyone to give an ssb interview to get a job in the officer rank in the army. Through this interview, the physical, intellectual and personal abilities of each candidate are specially calculated. This interview is one of the toughest interviews to be held in our country but if you have prepared well then you will definitely get success.
SSB interview is conducted at any one of the total 11 SSB centres set up by the defence ministry. This interview process lasts for five days in which different tests are taken every day. Only after successfully completing the SSB interview process, the candidate will be sent for training at any one of the total 08 training centres of Indian Airforce, Navy and Army.

How to go for an SSB interview?
The candidate has to first clear the army recruitment exam (like NDA/NA, CDS, AFCAT, TES, SSC (T) UES) conducted by the Ministry of Defense, Government of India. Some candidates are also called for SSB interviews through DIRECT CALL LATTER.
After getting the call letter for the SSB interview, you have to visit your SSB centre on the given date. Let us tell you, the government provides travelling allowance to the candidate for going to SSB centre.
SSB Interview Process:
As we told you above, SSB Interview is of 5 days in which the candidate has to go through a different test each day.
All the tests under SSB Interview are divided into 2 stages –
Stage I
Screening Test
Stage II
- Psychological Test
- Group Testing Officers Test (GTO Interview)
- Personal Interview
- Conference
Tests of both the stages are organised in the following way in 5 days –
- First Day – Screening Test
- Second Day – Psychological Test
- Third & Fourth Day – Group Testing Officer Test
- Second & Fourth Day – Personal Interview
- Fifth Day – Conference
Day 1 – Screening Test
On the first day of SSB interview, you have a screening test, which consists of two exams. Your test process starts between 5-6 in the morning.
There are 2 types of tests under the screening test –
- officer intelligence rating (OIR) / intelligence test
- Picture Perception and Description Test (PPDT) / Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT)
Officer intelligence rating
In the Intelligence Test, simple logic and aptitude skills of the candidate are tested. Through this test, the quick thinking and analytical thinking of the candidate is checked.
In this test questions are asked from QUANTITATIVE APTITUDE and VERBAL and NON VERBAL REASONING.
Candidates have a total time of 30 minutes for this exam. They have to solve a total of 50 questions within 30 minutes.
There are MCQ questions in this, in which there is no negative marking. Based on the performance of this test, the candidates are given a rating.
Picture perception and description test
Through picture perception and description test or PPDT, the test of creativity and creativity of the candidate is taken. In this test a black and white photo is shown to the candidates for 30 seconds.
After that each candidate is given a white sheet in which the title of the story has to be written. After that there is a small box in which some details related to the picture have to be written. For example, what is the mood of the character, gender, age and position of the character have to be marked.
Candidates get 3 minutes time to write a story on the photo shown.
To pass the picture perception and description test, it becomes necessary for the candidates to understand the pictures shown for the story correctly.
In this, the board officers judge the candidates only on the positive attitude that how the candidate’s way of looking at things. After this the candidates are divided into sub groups in which there are 14-15 candidates in a group.
After that there is a group discussion test on pictures. The Group Discussion tests the candidates’ power of expression, clarity of language (logical and grammatical), confidence participation and ability to accept ideas from others.
The result depends on the body language and attitude of the candidates during the entire test. Therefore, it is very important for the candidates to be attentive and confident in this process.
Result of Screening Test –
After the exam of PPDT, the candidates are given break time (lunch and rest time). The result of the screening round is declared after the break.
Day 2 – Psychological Test
Psychologist exam is conducted on the second day of SSB interview process. Various types of tests are taken under this exam.
In this, candidates are given stressful situations and they have to write the answer in their sheet in very less time.
There are mainly 4 tests under Psychological Test –
TAT (THEMATIC APPLICATION TEST) / Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
Through the TAT test, the creativity and decision making intelligence of the candidates is tested. In this 12 pictures are shown to the candidates and they have to write a story in 4 minutes for each picture.
WAT (WORD ASSOCIATION TEST) / Word Association Test (WAT)
The WAT test judges the personality of the candidates. In this, candidates are shown 60 words one by one and each word is shown for 15 seconds and the candidates have to write a meaningful sentence from that word on their answer sheet within this time.
SRT (SITUATION REACTION TEST) / Situation Reaction Test (SRT)
In SRT, some situations are given to the candidates, how you make decisions in that situation and how you come out of that situation is tested.
Candidates are given 60 questions in 30 minutes and you are given 10 minutes for the questions. You have to prepare 2-3 sentences based on each situation.
SDT (SELF DESCRIPTION TEST) / SELF DESCRIPTION TEST (SD)
You should prepare for SDT in advance. In this test, candidates have to write about their parents, teachers, friends and what opinion they have about themselves. It has to pay attention to both positive and negative things.
Day 3 and 4 – Group Testing Officers Test (GTO Interview)
The third day of the SSB interview process is considered as the ‘Test of Your Body and Coordination Between Your Body and Mind’.
On this day there is an officer who forms a group of candidates. There are 8-10 candidates in each group and they supervise the work of the group. It is judged on the physical and mental abilities of the candidates.
Different types of tests are included in GTO test –
GROUP DISCUSSION
This is the first test, in which the candidates have to discuss the events happening in the society and the social and political events going on in the present time and the defence special incident.
Through this test, the decision making ability of the candidates and their thinking power are tested.
GROUP PLANNING EXERCISE
In this test, some situational problems and maps are given to each group.
Each candidate has to write their planning on the given problems and then later the group members have to discuss together and come up with a common plan on everyone’s consent. Finally a group member has to explain the common planning with the help of map and pointer.
Progressive Group Task (PGT)
PGT has to be done in an open field. In this you will be given some obstacles in the open field. You have to tell your partner about your plan and by following this plan you have to cross the obstacles.
The level of obstacles increases as you cross these obstacles. Through this, the ability to work with your team is seen in you. You have to complete this test in a time frame of 30-40 minutes.
Half Group Task (HGT)
Like PGT, there is also HGT. The only difference is that in this the number of group members is reduced to half. In this, each group is divided into two parts. In this too, obstacles have to be overcome in the time frame of 10-15 minutes.
Individual Obstacles Task (IoT) / (INDIVIDUAL OBSTACLES)
In IoT, the candidate has to cross 10 hurdles in a time frame of 3-4 minutes alone.
COMMAND TASK
COMMAND TASK is also like TGT and PGT. In this task also the candidate has to cross some obstacles with the help of 2-3 subordinates. In this round you have to choose any two members from your team who can help you in completing the task.
Group Obstacle Race
Group Obstacle Race is also called snake race. Through this test, the quality of leadership qualities inside the candidate and how the candidate leads their team is checked.
In this, the candidate has to cross 6 obstacles along with his teammates, in which the candidate has to cross some obstacles by holding a snake-like rope.
INDIVIDUAL OBSTACLES
In this round the candidate has to cross 10 hurdles alone (like Single ramp, double barrel beam balancing screen, jump Burma bridge Tarzan swing double platform jump double disc Commando walk Tiger leap).
FINAL GROUP TASK
FINAL GROUP TASK is the final round of the fourth and fifth day in which you have to overcome obstacles with your entire team. This round tests how well you can work with your team.
Day 2 and 4 – Personal Interview
Candidates can be called for a personal interview on any of the 2nd or 4th day. A day in advance, the candidates are told the time for this.
Questions related to personal information are given to every candidate for a personal interview.
Day 5 – Conference
The fifth day of the SSB interview is the conference, in which a round table conference is held.
SSB board members (SSB President, SSB Vice-President, Psychologists GTO, IO) and candidates are present in this conference.
There is a round table conference in the conference. In which SSB board members: SSB President, SSB Vice-President, Psychologist GTO, IO (All three interviewers) and candidates are present. The final evaluation of the candidates takes place in this conference.
Interviewers ask the candidate 3-4 questions in the conference. This SSB interview process consists of 5 to 10 minutes.
