Murfreesboro, Tennessee’s fastest-growing city, is a vibrant college town and a place in which history is as important as the future. It mostly runs parallel to Stones River. Cannonsburgh Village is the best place to experience the city’s history. Fortress Rosecrans, Stones River National Battlefield and the Hazen Brigade Monument are two places that can help you learn more about the impact of the American Civil War on the area. Barfield-Crescent Park and Wilderness Station

Barfield Crescent Park, a popular park covering 430 acres in Murfreesboro’s southern part, is very popular. There are picnic shelters, softball and baseball fields, three Little League fields, a regular baseball field, four multipurpose fields, seven miles of paved and gravel hiking trails, 13 campsites and two playgrounds. The park also has classrooms for environmental education and an 18-hole championship disc golf course. It also houses a very active wilderness station. Its mission is to provide families with opportunities to explore the wilderness and learn about it through programs like campfire talks, interpretive hiking, river explorations, etc. There are topics like Wild Things, Puppets on the Porch and Tales and Trails. Twelve stations are located along the tremendous Tree Trail and offer information about the plants that hikers will see as they go.

Batey Farms

Batey Farms, a family farm that was built in 1807 with a Revolutionary War grant is located in Rutherford County, 6 miles from Murfreesboro. The 8th generation still owns the farm and it is a popular spot for locals and tourists to buy fresh produce. The farm includes a hog, row crop, hay and hog farm. They also grow sweet corn, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. Visit the farm to pick your own corn. You can also shop at the farm shop which is open every day. Or, you can look for their produce at the Murfreesboro Saturday Farmer’s Market.

Bradley Academy Museum and Cultural Center

Today a lively cultural centre and a museum, Bradley Academy was the first school open in Murfreesboro. It was built in 1806 for the education of white males only. From 1884, women and African American students were also allowed to attend.  Today, the Bradley Academy Museum and Cultural Center serves as a community centre and museum and houses the original classroom, a Civil War exhibit, and an exhibition on early settlers to the county of Rutherford and the city of Murfreesboro. The Bradley Academy Museum and Cultural Center have a spacious auditorium, which also serves as a dining area, a meeting room, and a theatre for concerts and plays.

Cannonsburgh Village

The Historic Cannonsburgh Village is located in downtown Murfreesboro on 6 acres. It represents Murfreesboro (then called Cannonsburgh) as it looked between the 1830s and the 1930s. Cannonsburgh Village is a typical Southern village. It has a one-room schoolhouse and a gristmill. A telephone operator’s cabin, a phone operator’s cabin, a caboose. The Leeman House, the museum, general store, doctor’s office, blacksmith’s shop and other facilities were part of the village where the pioneers lived. The World’s Largest Cedar Bucket is one of many interesting items from their daily lives. Visitors can explore the area on their own, or join a guided tour.

Discovery Center

Murfreesboro’s most loved children’s museum is Discovery Center. Discovery Center was opened in 1986 and features an interactive museum, a living, breathing wetland, and an interactive, educational museum. Permanent exhibits at the centre include 5 Senses, which explores human senses using large models of the nose and eyes, ears, tongue and mouth, Creation Station, which uses clay and chalks to help children express their creativity, and Farmers’ Market which shows how food travels from the fields where it is grown to our tables. The 20-acre Discovery Center wetland preserves and displays rare native wetland plants. It also introduces the wetlands ecosystem to visitors who walk along the boardwalks.

Fortress Rosecrans

Fortress Rosecrans, which was constructed by the Federal Army in January 1863 to protect Murfreesboro, was built after the Battle at Stones River. It was named after General William S. Rosecrans who was the commander of the Army of the Cumberland. After the war ended in 1866, the army left the fortress. The Stones River National Battlefield now includes the fortress. Redoubt Brannan’s earthworks are on West College Street. Lunette Negley’s remains are on private property.

General Bragg Trailhead

The General Bragg Trailhead is located on West College Street. It’s one of many trailheads that leads to Murfreesboro’s Stones River Greenway System. There is a picnic area with toilets, a playground for children, and a fountain at the trailhead. It is also near a large parking lot. You can access some beautiful parts of the Greenway from this trailhead. A spur trail runs from the pavilion to the Stones River National Battlefield. This adds 1.5 miles to your hike. You will reach General Bragg Trailhead approximately halfway along the Greenway, 1.5 mi if you start at the Thompson Lane Trailhead/Fortress Rosecrans Trailhead.

Hazen Brigade Monument

The Stones River National Cemetery is home to the Hazen Brigade Monument. It is the Civil War’s oldest monument and is still in its original location. Col. William B. Hazen led the brigade. It was well-known for its pivotal role in the Battle of Stones River on its first day. The Confederate Army was unable to advance due to the efforts of the brigade, which prevented them from pushing the Union Army back towards Nashville. Col. Isaac C. B. Suman and Colonel Hazen decided to construct a monument to honour the fallen soldiers. They worked for six months on it. The monument’s stone enclosure contained 45 soldiers from their brigade.
