How to Cite a Netflix Movie in Academic Writing

You must’ve heard the term “Netflix and Chill”. But now, let’s talk about Netflix and Research. Many people use Netflix for fun purposes. It has a bundle of series, seasons, and entertaining videos.

There are several videos available on Netflix. Most students use it for fun. But now the time has changed. In the current century, Netflix is used for academic writing too.

Students use the information shown in any movie or documentary. They don’t hesitate while using Netflix as a source. This aspect is becoming common day by day.

The only problem is to be aware of plagiarism, and copy-right issues. It is also evident that Netflix appears on citation machines on a large scale. The researcher takes a lot of material from this platform.

Here the point to wonder for a researcher is how to cite data taken from Netflix. Now you don’t need to worry about it. Here is the solution to your problem. You can cite data taken from Netflix.

You can also go for any citation style. These include MLA, APA, and Chicago/Turabian styles of referencing.

For this, there are some basic points that you have to understand first. This information requires that you must be aware of the title of film. This can also include anything else you’ve watched for research purposes.

Or you can directly use the episode of the movie. You must also know name of the site, director, producer, and all performers. This should be noted just as we highlight publisher of any journal.

You also have to note the name of Production Company. Same as we note the publication date, you have to note that movie’s release date. In the end, you must know the URL.

But like the research paper, you may not have all the required data. Again you do not have to worry about it. For this, you may seek help from your advisor at the college, or university.

Another solution is to ask from the Netflix service in an easy way. In academic writing citations, the more data you provide, the more authentic it becomes.

It is very obvious to avoid plagiarism in academic writing (Lobato, 2018). If you add more information, there will less chances of this.

Let’s discuss how to cite Netflix movies in academic writing. Through this article, you will also know how to cite in different styles.

Citation in MLA 9

According to a masters dissertation help, there are two ways to cite Netflix movies. The first one is to cite through the website. At the same time, the second one is to cite Netflix movies through an app. For website citation, you have to follow the following pattern of adding information.

Title of the movie. The director’s and performer’s first, and last name, and name of the production company. Followed by the year of movie’s publication. Netflix, add URL. For example;

Over The Moon. Directed by Glen Keane, Netflix Animation, 2020. Netflix, www.netflix.com/title/80214236

When you have to cite Netflix movies through an app, you have to use another pattern. This pattern includes;

Title of the movie. The director, and performer’s first and last name, and name of the production company. Followed by the year of movie’s publication. Netflix app. For example;

Over The Moon. Directed by Glen Keane, Netflix Animation, 2020. Netflix app.

Here an important point to note is what missing information is manageable. If you don’t find name of the director and performer, you can skip these. You can still expand reach horizon for the reader.For this, you can add the name of the creator, or writer.

Citation in APA

Academic Writing

The citation sources are still the same. But the difference is in style. Let us discuss both sources, and their citations one by one.

Suppose you are provided with a URL. URL of the homepage is always preferable in APA style. Avoid using a direct URL. Then the citation format includes following;

Last name of the producer and director. This is followed by the release date. Title of the movie, and URL.

For example;

Kohler, W., Davidson, K., Knopfler, W, & DiCaprio, L., & Ladkani, R., Davidson, K.. (2016). The ivory game. Retrieved from https://www.netflix.com

Another example of APA citation is as follows;

Bremble, C., Chan, J., Giovine, T, & She, W. (Producers), & Appelhans, C. (Director). 2021. Wish Dragon [Video file]. Retrieved from https://www.netflix.com

Citation in Chicago/Turabian

According to experts of cheapest dissertation writing services, the last Netflix citation style is Chicago/Turabian. In Chicago/Turabian, it is easy to handle things. This style is not commonly used. But still, let us discuss how Netflix movies are cited in this style. The citation in this type includes the following;

Last name of director, first name, and dir. Title of the movie. Name of the production company, and date of release. URL.

For example;

Michelle Johnston, dir. A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish, Blue Ribbon Content & Front Street Pictures Inc., 2019. https://www.netflix.com/title/81148811

Here an important point to note is how to deal with two directors. A research paper can have more than one author. Similarly, movies can have more than one director. Let’s discuss the case of two authors. When you have two directors of the movie, you should mention the name of first director in reverse order. Like, (last name, first name). And then you should mention name of the second director in normal order. Like, (first name last name).

Relevant Data Rules

It is very important to understand the need for a citation. Every researcher should be well aware of this. Without citation, you cannot have authentic research. Citation provides strength to your arguments.

It also reduces the chances of plagiarism in academic writing. At the beginner level of research, you may be unaware of this. But it’s your responsibility to note what is important for good academic writing.

You may seek help from your advisor, internet, or fellow class members if needed. Citation is the only way to inspect originality of your work. Also, the credibility of a researcher matters a lot in the field of research.

Without credibility, your work is of no use. It is very important to understand that citation of Netflix data is also necessary (Turner, 2019). Hopefully through this article, you won’t be confused about citing data from Netflix anymore.
